Intrinsically safe (IS) keyboards and pointing devices are built with equipment and wiring that are incapable, says the vendor, of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy that could cause ignition of a specific hazardous atmospheric mixture in its most easily ignited concentration. All IS keyboards have Factory Mutual certification for Class I, II, and III, Division I, Groups C, D, E, F, and G. The nonincendive (NI) keyboards have electrical circuitry that is incapable, under normal operating conditions, of causing ignition of a specified flammable gas-air, vapor-air, or dust-air mixture due to arcing or thermal means, the vendor says. These keyboards have Factory Mutual certification for Class I, Division II.
