The University of Washinton Clinical Cyclotron is one of only two worldwide used for external beam radiotherapy. This kind of neutron therapy is effective against salivary gland tumors and some other forms of cancer.
In 2007 they began the process of upgrading the control system moving to a distributed system. For the larger custom magnet power supplies Acromag's BusWorks 900EN and EtherStax Ethernet were used. "We have had Acromag Ethernet devices running in the control system since 2008, reating patients 8 hours a day, 4 days a week and have found them to be extremely reliable," stated Robert Emery, senior principal research engineer at UW Clinical Cyclotron.
