Augmented Reality Hits the Ski Slopes

Augmented reality ski googles bring a digital and social component to shredding.

If RideOn has its way, Pokemon Go may soon have to share the spotlight in the budding Augmented Reality (AR) field. The Israeli-based startup is banking that everyday enthusiasts will see value in adding the AR experience to their favorite outdoor activities, from skiing to cycling to sailing and beyond.

Through a game-like experience, the company’s first product, RideOn's ski goggles, lets skiers navigate the slope with the help of additional information, including speed and weather conditions, along with the ability to project directions on the snow or generate a virtual slalom course for optimal shredding. Surprise, surprise, there’s also a social component that lets you quickly locate friends in the area, send a hands-free text message, record and share video of your killer run, and get a heads up on lift line waits.

Skiing is the company’s first target area, but RideOn plans to bring AR experiences to other outdoor activities and industries through an upcoming line of products. While hitting the slopes with AR in tow is bound to be gnarly, there’s also plenty of opportunity for distraction. Can you say wipeout?
