On the same day that the 2010 edition of the biennial International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) opens its six-day run in Chicago, there is good news on the manufacturing front, with new numbers showing nearly a 60 percent increase in U.S.machine toolsales through the first seven months of 2010.
July U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $266.08 million, according to figures released on Sept. 13 by theAmerican Machine Tool Distributors’ Association (AMTDA,www.amtda.org)andThe Association For Manufacturing Technology (AMT,www.amtonline.org). This total, as reported by companies participating in the United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption (USMTC) program, was up 10.1 percent from June and up 72.6 percent from the total of $154.13 million reported for July 2009.
With a year-to-date total of $1.474 billion, 2010 is up 58.9 percent compared with 2009, the two associations reported. The numbers and all data in the report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTC program.
Beat the doldrums
“We are pleased that July sales have exceeded expectations and that we’re not seeing the normal summer doldrums for machine tool purchases,” said Peter Borden, AMTDA president. “IMTS 2010, opening today in Chicago, will be a key indicator of the ongoing strength of themanufacturing recoverythat we have seen gaining momentum since January.”
Peter Eelman, vice president, Exhibitions & Communications for AMT, said, “We are very excited that the opening of IMTS - The Manufacturing Technology Show, is coinciding with positive signs in the manufacturing industry. In fact, a recent surge in advance registrations has brought pre-show registration numbers to within six percent of 2008 advance numbers. In short, we’re looking forward to a great show and believe IMTS is the place the rally cry for the revitalization of manufacturing will take place.”
