The food and beverage industry will see continued growth in automation, with machine-to-machine communication being paramount, according to a new study from PMMI Business Intelligence. The industry is seeing growth in the use of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), servos and software to improve safety, offer real-time monitoring, improve machine vision inspection, provide data collection, and generally improve machine-to-machine communication, contends the study,2018 Food and Beverage Processing Report.

This is necessary in no small part because of each food processing OEM typically focusing on one specialized niche. This makes it difficult for CPGs to find providers of whole systems, so the ability to integrate machines from various suppliers is critical. This especially means growth of technologies within Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to connect the integrated line to the enterprise.
